We have a template we use to build a database of keywords to target for SEO purposes. We start by finding opportunities.
Finding existing keywords is critical because it’s a better bet to invest time and effort into keywords and pages that Google is already favoring.
In short:
If pages are showing up in the top 100 for many keywords, then Google somewhat likes it. We just need to refine the strategy to improve performance.
Low-hanging fruits are keywords ranking between #2 – #15. These keywords are golden opportunities to increase organic search traffic without much effort.
Clustering opportunities are keywords ranking from positions #50 – #100. When keywords rank in these positions it’s a sign that a dedicated page may be necessary.
The purpose of an SEO content gap analysis is to find out what keywords competitors are ranking for, but we are not. We can then create dedicated pages for the keywords to narrow the gap (and drive more organic search traffic).
The purpose of this process is to find keyword opportunities for a website with no existing organic search traffic (usually a new website or website that’s never done any SEO). We add every keyword opportunity we find to the keyword database.
Unknown” keywords are those that most competitors ignore because the ideas don’t show in traditional SEO tools. These ideas likely won’t have search volume, but they are validated based on user signals from other channels.

Once you've selected the "Primary" and "Secondary" keywords, reach out to get approval. We have to review the selections and get approval from the client BEFORE doing any further qualifications.
At this point, we already have a solid number of Primary and Secondary keywords. Now it's time to assign intents to those keywords.

This is our own unique mechanic we use in our qualification process. We use the IRT score for a maximum of 100 primary keywords. Less is fine, but don't exceed 100.

We calculate the average DR for each result (excluding ours). Enter it in the "Average DR" column and then enter our DR next to it.

At this point, all of the "Primary" keywords should have all of the backlink data in place. Now it's time to score the keywords using our point system.
